I am working slightly more hours at Joanns. Yesterday they had me recover the wilton and bridal aisles. OMG! i have never wanted to eat cake so badly before. I even bought myself a couple things when i got off work. since it appears that i am never going to be able to take the wilton courses (as they are scheduled either at my dialysis times or when i am working) I bought myself the coursework book and as soon as i get some free time imma practice!
This means baking a lot of cakes.
Also got myself a cook/cupcake halloween stencil. Jackolantern faces and the like. And a mini muffin tin and mini cupcake papers. ^_^ Now the stencil is only for normal sized cupcakes and cookies.
i got home and wanted to bake obviously so i grabbed a book and started flipping through it. Didnt see anything particularly grabbing in Julia Child's book so I dug out something given to me by Ingrid. It was like a bonus free item when she bought aaron and I our cookbook holder thingy. The Original White House Cookbook. 1887 edition. Oi. I flip through to the cake section and start to read the little intro thingy.
"Cake is too often spoiled for being looked at too often when first put into the oven. The heat should be tested before the cake is put in, which can be done by throwing on the floor of the oven a tablespoonful of new flour. if the flour takes fire, or assumes a dark brown color, the temperature is too high.." Um.. duh.. So yes, its in this old style of speaking. And the recipes are in paragraph form so the ingredients are written out just like that. A tablespoonful, one and one half cupfulls. Etc. Temperatures are difficult to determine. Ive only really read the cake section and it mentions "moderate temperature." Aaron guessed it would be about 400F. I called mom and she had the same thoughts i did that it would be about 350F.
I finally picked a cake from the book and get up to go to the store, unfortunately everyone else and their brother seemed to be at walmart and it took me way too long to get out of there. So i didnt have time to bake when i got home.
I did make us dinner though, beef pot pie.
